Meyerhoff Scholars Program
Scholarship Sponsored by University of Maryland, Baltimore County
The Meyerhoff Scholars Program is designed for students who have a keen interest in the fields of science, engineering, mathematics, or computer science and have plans to pursue a Ph.D. or a combined M.D./Ph.D. in these areas. The selection committee evaluates applicants based on their academic achievements, standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, and a demonstrated commitment to community service.
Previously, the Meyerhoff Program required a nomination to initiate the application process. Although this is no longer a prerequisite, it is still strongly recommended. Nominations are often made by high school administrators, guidance counselors, or teachers. However, other influential adults in the student's life, such as community leaders, mentors, and family members, can also nominate deserving students.
The application and selection process typically follows this timeline:
July 1 The Nomination Form becomes available. Nominated students will be informed in mid-September (and on a rolling basis thereafter) about the application process for our program.
August 31 The Meyerhoff Scholars Program Application is made available on Scholarship Retriever.
September 15 Letters explaining the eligibility criteria and how to access the online nomination forms are sent to principals and guidance counselors.
October 15 While we recommend nominations by this date, late submissions will not disadvantage the student. The nominee will receive a letter encouraging them to apply to the Meyerhoff Scholars Program at their mailing address and/or email address as provided on the nomination form. Please note: the nomination form will close at 9:00am EST, December 1, 2024.
November 1 This is the UMBC Admissions Early Action Deadline. Before applying to the Meyerhoff Scholars Program, students must first submit a general UMBC application for undergraduate admission. We encourage students to meet the Early Action admissions deadline of November 1. A week after applying, students will receive their UMBC campus ID and password, which are necessary to access the Meyerhoff application. Applications for UMBC Regular Admissions Decision can be submitted after the November 1 deadline.
December 1 This is the Meyerhoff Online Application Priority Deadline. Applications and supporting documents for the Meyerhoff Program will be accepted beyond the Priority Deadline (without any penalty to the applicant) until the online submission portal closes on January 15, 2025. We strongly recommend submitting no later than January 5 to ensure your application is reviewed in a timely manner.
January 15 This is the final day to submit an application and the deadline for uploading letters of recommendation to Scholarship Retriever.
January 31 Invitations to participate in one of two Meyerhoff Selection Weekends are sent to top applicants who meet the eligibility criteria, including submission of a completed UMBC undergraduate admissions application and a Meyerhoff Scholars Program application. Invited students are required to take the UMBC Math placement test before their Selection Weekend.
April 1 Decision letters from the Meyerhoff Program are sent to all applicants.
May 1 Students must accept or decline Meyerhoff and UMBC admission offers by this date. This deadline also applies to students who applied under early action.
